Solo Seal

Solo Seal was introduced in 1928 as an additional examination for students who had achieved the Advanced Certificate. This is the highest Vocational Graded examination of the Royal Academy of Dance and focuses on solo performance.

Candidates are required to perform three variations, which have been selected to meet the stylistic and movement demands of today’s choreographers and directors.

Solo Seal takes place in front of an invited audience and panel of judges, which normally consists of a Vocational Grades examiner and professional dancer or former dancer from a ballet company, approved by the artistic director of the Academy.

In the Solo Seal examination, students, through participation and practice, will acquire the ability to perform three contrasting variations showing a consistently high level of accomplishment, musicality, style and presentation.

Solo Seal 2020

We are delighted to announce that tickets are now available for our Solo Seal event, which will take place on Sunday 8 November at 3pm at Te Whaea in Wellington.  Solo Seal will be followed by a presentation of certificates to the recently graduated Certificate of Ballet Teaching Studies students.  Ticket sales will be very closely monitored as we prepare to hold the event under Alert Level 2 conditions – at the same time hopeful that we will be on Alert Level 1 by November.  Please order your tickets using the form below so that we have the details of all those attending for contact tracing purposes.  Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis.  If due to a change in Alert Levels or physical distancing requirements, we have to reduce the number of people that can attend, you will be contacted and the cancelled tickets will be fully refunded.  There will be no door sales.  Solo Seal is the highest RAD exam and focuses on solo performance.  This is an opportunity to see our most dedicated and accomplished students at their best.  There will be two candidates performing this year.
